In Calgary, you are not required to get prepared for the GED exam through an adult education program, nor are you required to first attain sufficient results on the official GED practice test before you can write the GED exam.

However, as the GED test is rather challenging, you are advised to become well-prepared by, for example, signing up for accredited Canadian GED online classes like the affordable program designed by Onsego.

In Calgary, you have the option to take the five GED sub-exams on paper or on a computer, and if you wish, you may even combine them.

The five GED subtests

You can earn your High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma by passing the five separate modules (independent subtests) that make up the GED (General Education Development) exam.

The five GED subtests test knowledge and skills in the following academic subject areas:

  • Language Arts Writing (part 1 & part 2)
  • Language Arts Reading
  • Mathematics (part 1 & part 2)
  • Social Studies
  • Science

Eligibility requirements

To qualify for high school equivalency testing, GED applicants are required to meet the following criteria:

  • GED candidates must be at least 18 years old, though 17-year-olds may also qualify if they meet some extra strict requirements.
  • GED candidates must have been officially withdrawn from school for at least a period of 10 months.
  • GED candidates cannot already hold a high school or equivalent diploma.
  • GED candidates must attain a 450 score on EACH of the five GED modules. So, an overall score of at least 2250 is required.
  • There are more requirements that must be met, so please contact your GED administrator or a test center in your area.

Practically all colleges and employers accept the GED credential as the equivalency of a common high school diploma. Passing the five sub-exams that make up the Canadian GED exam will give you the GED diploma.
