In Texas, to receive your GED diploma, you have to pass the four subtests that make up the GED exam. Testing is possible online or at state-designated GED test centers.

GED applicants must register for the GED® exam or the GED Ready® practice tests on the website GED.com.

The four GED subtests are challenging assessments, and the key to your success is becoming perfectly prepared. On average, GED applicants need some 2-3 months to get sufficiently prepared to take the GED battery successfully.

• Applicants cannot already have a high school or equivalent diploma.
• Applicants cannot be registered for another education program.
• The minimum age for GED testing in Texas is 16.
• Test-takers 16 or 17 years of age, however, need to meet additional requirements such as having permission from their school districts and holding parental consent.
• 16-year-old applicants may also qualify if they submit a court order indicating GED testing is required or allowed.
• Texas requires test-takers to be state residents.

The GED price is $36.25 per individual subtest (or $145 in total) when taken at a Texas test center.

When taken online, the Texas GED test costs $42.25 for each module or, in total, $169. Keep in mind, however, that online test-takers should also count the $28 for four GED Ready practice tests, which total $197.

To qualify for the online GED test, applicants need to attain passing scores (in the “green” zone) first on the GED Ready practice test. For each of the four GED subtests, there is a GED Ready test that must be purchased on the GED.com website at $6.99 each.
