What’s On The HiSET Exam?

The HiSET has five tests in the academic subject fields of Math, Language Writing, Language Reading, Science, and Social Studies. As stated earlier, there’s no requirement to take the entire HiSET exam altogether because the exam is modular. As stated earlier, you have the freedom to take the five subtests one (or more) at a time.

The West Virginia High School Equivalency (HSE) credential is equivalent to a standard high school diploma and is recognized and accepted by virtually all American employers, government agencies, and institutions of higher education.

HiSET Scoring

So in West Virginia, the HiSET is free for WV residents, and most prep sites in the state are providing prep classes at no charge as well. To pass the five HiSET subtests, you need to attain at least a score of 8 (out of 20) on each subtest, your total score must be in the 45-100 range, and your essay must have at least a 2-score (out of a possible 6). See also this page about HiSET requirements in West Virginia.

Option Pathway Program

Underage HiSET applicants (16, 17, or 18 years old) who are enrolled in high school may also qualify to partake in the Option Pathway Program. This program allows students to sit for the HiSET exam while still being signed up for high school.

Students need to meet specific program guidelines and need to be referred to the Option Pathway Program by a counselor, teacher, or school administrator.

Before students can register for the West Virginia HiSET exam, they must pass the HiSET Official Practice Test (OPT), which is available at the state’s Adult Education (AE) Centers and at Option Pathway Program schools. Adult Education and Option Pathway teachers will assist students with the process of online registration and how to schedule the HiSET subtests.

How To Prepare For The HiSET Exam

The HiSET exam is quite challenging. The passing standards are set up in such a way that of all high school graduates, some 40 percent would not be able to pass the exam on the first try, so be wise and get optimally prepared.

You can attend a physical HiSET prep class (offered all over West Virginia) or sign up for a well-respected online GED prep course such as the Onsego online GED classes, an ideal solution for students living in remote areas and those with busy schedules. Onsego’s GED content will work for HiSET students also very well.

Whichever way you prefer, just make sure you’ll get optimally prepared to take the West Virginia High School Equivalency test successfully. Online HiSET testing is also possible for qualifying candidates, or you can come to an official WV testing center and sit for the five tests in person.
