Students do not have the option to take the West Virginia GED Online.

To test online in another state, they first achieve sufficient scores on the official GED Ready® practice test.

The West Virginia GED® exam has four separate subtests, covering math, language (reading and writing combined), social studies, and science. subtests.

All GED sub-exams are independent modules that may be taken one (or more) at a time.

West Virginia is actually one of only four states that offer High School Equivalency testing entirely for free.

So you’ll understand that in West Virginia, the GED exam is only open to state residents.

Bear in mind that in West Virginia, the GED exam must be taken on a computer. Paper-based testing is not possible.

In total, the four GED subtests will require around 7.5 hours to complete, usually spread out over a couple of days, but you can take the subtests separately and in any preferred order. The exam also includes writing an essay.

As stated before, if you want to take the online GED test in a state other than West Virginia without any residency requirement, you’ll first have to reach passing scores on the official GED Ready practice test.

What’s on the GED Exam?

The GED exam has four tests in the academic subject fields of Math, Language (Writing and Reading combined), Science, and Social Studies.

As stated earlier, there’s no requirement to take the entire GED exam altogether because the exam is modular, and you have the freedom to take the subtests one (or more) at a time.

The West Virginia High School Equivalency (HSE) credential is equivalent to a standard high school diploma and is recognized and accepted by virtually all American employers, government agencies, and institutions of higher education.

GED Scoring

In West Virginia, the GED exam is free for WV residents, and most prep sites in the state also provide prep classes at no charge.

To pass the GED modules, you need to attain at least a 145 score, and this applies to each GED subtest. Your GED results are calibrated on a 100-200 scoring scale.

Option Pathway Program

Underage GED applicants (16, 17, or 18 years old) who are enrolled in high school may also qualify to partake in the Option Pathway Program. This program allows students to sit for the exams while still enrolled in high school.

Students must meet specific program guidelines and be referred to the Option Pathway Program by a counselor, teacher, or school administrator.

Before students can register for the West Virginia GED exam, they must pass the GED Ready Official Practice Test, which is available at the state’s Adult Education (AE) Centers and at Option Pathway Program schools.

Adult Education and Option Pathway teachers will assist students with online registration and scheduling GED subtests.

How to Prepare for the GED Exam

The GED exam is quite challenging. The passing standards are set up in such a way that, of all high school graduates, some 40 percent would not be able to pass the exam on the first try, so be wise and get optimally prepared.
