The GED (General Education Development) exam consists of four pretty challenging sub-exams, so getting well-prepared is crucial for success. On average, GED applicants require 2 to 3 months to become optimally prepared.

Virginia GED Requirements

  • Test-takers cannot already hold a high school or equivalent diploma.
  • Test-takers cannot be registered for another educational program.
  • The minimum age is 16 in Virginia.
  • 16 and 17-year-olds, however, must meet additional criteria such as having permission from their school districts and parental consent.
  • Applicants do not have to be Virginia residents.
  • There is no need in Virginia to first take the GED Ready practice test when you sit for the exam at a test center.

Virginia GED Price

When taken at one of Virginia’s test centers, the four GED subtests cost $36 each in Virginia (so $144 for the entire GED exam).

In Virginia, the online GED exam costs $36 per subtest as well, so $144 in total. But to qualify for the online test, you must first reach sufficient scores (in the “green” zone)  on the GED Ready test.

For each GED subtest, there’s a GED Ready test (so four in total) that must be bought at $6.99 each on the GED.com website. You should add that to the cost of taking the GED test online, which brings your total to $172.

Online GED Test

So today, the GED test is available online as well. In earlier days, GED candidates had to come to one of Virginia’s state-certified GED testing centers and take the four GED subtests face-to-face. Well, those days are over.

To be eligible for online GED testing, the students first need to reach “green” (or likely to pass) scores on the official GED Ready test. If you want to read more about GED-at-Home testing, go to this page: Online Proctored GED Testing.

GED Scoring

The GED modules (subtests) are independent tests that can be taken separately. Scoring is measured on a 100 to 200 scale and is done as follows:

  • Below Passing: 100 – 144
  • High school equivalency: 145 – 164
  • College-ready: 165 – 174
  • College-ready + college credits: 175 – 200

Students scoring in the last two categories may have college admission prerequisites such as SAT or ACT scores waived. See also our post about the online Virginia GED test.
