Onsego has joined the fight against GED fraud and cheating. GED Testing Service (ged.com), the official organization behind the GED test, has been effectively fighting against diploma mill websites for years.
The ged.com website provides tips on how to spot websites that offer fake diplomas and what to do if you become a victim of fraud. You can read all about it here.
Onsego has joined this fight, and here, we share a few additional suggestions that might help you save your reputation and money. Here are the things we have recently noticed.
Beware of the following GED fraud signs:
- Students are promised that their high school credits can be used toward the GED diploma.
It’s an urban myth. You can get the GED® diploma only if you pass the 4 independent GED tests: math, science, social studies, and language. You need to get 145 on each of these four sub-exams. Your high school credits do not influence your GED score.
- Students are promised to get the GED diploma after completing a GED preparation course.
This is a total myth. The GED diploma is a certificate that’s issued by your state when you have successfully completed the GED exam. There are states that’ll send an email immediately after you have passed the four sub-exams, including a digital transcript and a copy of your e-diploma. Other states will send you a paper copy of your diploma and transcript by regular mail.
Providers of GED prep courses cannot issue GED diplomas. Only states can, so don’t get fooled!
Other ways of fraud that get people in trouble are when:
- Someone offers to take your online GED exam.
This is a big no-no. Online proctored GED tests are recorded and can be verified at any time. You and “an exam helper” can get into serious trouble. You will lose your GED credentials, money, reputation and get into legal problems.
- Websites offer a fake but “legal” GED diploma.
Here is the truth: buying or making yourself a GED diploma is not illegal. You are just paying a lot of money for some fancy paper. But if you try to pass a fake diploma off as real, then it’s fraud. Employers and schools can easily verify if your “diploma” is real.
- Websites offer digital “verified” diplomas.
It doesn’t matter if a fake diploma looks like a real one. Employees, schools, and any other third party can request your GED transcript, so it’s very easy to verify your credentials. For just $5 organizations can quickly check your credentials.
Unfortunately, we still see some “diploma mills” trying to take advantage of people that were not in the position to complete their high school education. They offer fake diplomas or fake tests, but please be aware that fake certificates or diplomas hold no value whatsoever!
There’s only one way to earn your GED diploma, and that’s through the GED Testing Service. The exam is given at state-recognized GED test centers and in an online proctored format. If you would use a fake GED diploma, chances are you’ll lose your job or get expelled from school. So please be aware of scams that are trying to sell you a fake GED diploma.
We’ve heard stories of students that spent hundreds of dollars on fake GED diplomas or took online tests that were actually based on nothing! Well, the fact of the matter is that these students just wasted their money. These fake “certificates” are not even worth the cost of the paper they’re printed on.
But let this not disappoint you. You can earn your high school equivalency diploma quite fast and easily if you attend a physical class in your area or sign up for a trusted online GED prep course.
To summarize, there are chances that you will be exposed to some forms of GED fraud but don’t get fooled. Getting your GED diploma is doable in a few months, and you can do it.
If you notice any questionable practices or when someone offers you a GED diploma without taking the exam through ged.com, get in touch with the GED Testing Service or send us an email.
